Being awarded a graduate assistantship not only helps pay for your graduate studies, it gives you valuable work experience, networking and mentorship opportunities, and skill development. This type of experience is especially helpful to those considering a career in academia.
AUS offers two main types of assistantships:
- Graduate Research Assistantships (GRAs), which allow you to work closely with one of our highly regarded faculty members on research projects and gain valuable research experience
- Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs), which help you gain teaching-related experience through roles like lab assistants or supporting faculty members in their courses
Assistantships can be held for up to two years and are competitively awarded each semester.
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible, you must:
- meet all university and program admission requirements
- maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
Note: Some programs may have additional requirements.
How to Apply
If you are applying to a graduate program at AUS and you also want to be considered for a graduate assistantship, please pay careful attention to the application deadlines. The deadlines for those applying both for admission and for an assistantship are often earlier than the regular graduate application deadlines. To view the deadlines, click here.
New applicants interested in a graduate assistantship should submit:
- a complete online graduate application, marking the assistantship section
- two reference letters from professors, submitted via the AUS online recommendation form (apply.aus.edu → Supplemental Items & Documents → Recommendation request)
Engineering applicants: Only two reference letters are needed; these will count for both the program application and assistantship consideration.
